Unemployment Claim

Where do I file my unemployment claim?

At Brigit, we are dedicated to helping manage your finances. As everyone continues to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re committed to providing you with the information needed to help.

If you have been impacted financially by Coronavirus due to job loss you can apply for your unemployment claim on your State’s Department of Labor website on weekdays between 7:30 am and 5 pm local time. You can use the Career One Stop, to find state-specific information, that is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor. Additionally, if your hours have been cut you may also be eligible for benefits (depending on your state’s benefit guidelines).

Benefits will vary by state

The seven day waiting period is being waived due to COVID-19 in some states, like New York. Be as proactive as possible. Wait times can vary by state. In addition, plan ahead as the process typically takes time. It will likely take even longer, due to the current circumstances.

When will I receive funds?

It can take up to 5 weeks to get paid for your coronavirus unemployment claim. Your first lump sum payment will include the previous weeks. Then, you will continue to receive one deposit per week after completing the weekly claim form online. The funds will be received by direct deposit into your bank account or a preloaded debit card. The amount received depends on your income history, and oftentimes, is a percentage of your total earnings. Keep in mind you must be ready, willing, able, and actively looking for work. Anything helps in these tough times though!

Attention: Nightlife Gig Workers

You should also reach out to your local government for help. We encourage New York City gig workers to email [email protected] or check out the city’s website for more assistance. The office can advocate for you when the city assembles a relief package for uninsured/independent workers. We recommend finding your industry-specific office in your home town or city.

Overall, it’s important to remain positive about your finances during a pandemic. And if you’re looking for more detailed reading about the unemployment claim benefits, watch out our more updates on the Brigit Blog.
